Land Cover and Vegetation Coverage Changes in the Mining Area—A Case Study from Slovakia

Dealing with landscape changes in space and time is an important activity terms of the process future development selected area. In particular, it necessary to focus on territories that are exposed effects extraction activities. The main objective paper was mapping spatio-temporal connection minerals due mining activities using satellite images data from Corine land cover (CLC) database environment geographic information systems. study area specific presence four mineral deposits (three which under active mining). Rohožník-Konopiská deposit abandoned subsequently reclaimed. used Landsat 5, 7, 8 for years period 1990–2021. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) calculated vegetation analysis, further combined forest spatial division units (FSDU) layer. Areas immediate vicinity open-pit mine were detailed analysis changes. Using FSDU data, average NDVI index value Zonal statistics function each plot. results showed over there have been indicating improvement condition by reclamation operations at two deposits, (inactive) Sološnica-Hrabník (active). analyzed CLC detected change deposit, but not these data. loss other mainly pre-mining preparatory work, causes removal soil layers.
